Sarah Spitalnick, a Baltimore lawyer, is trying to strike a hard bargain with King & Spalding. She filed suit against the law firm earlier this month, alleging it would not consider her for a summer associate diversity fellowship because she was white and heterosexual.
Spitalnick, a former University of Baltimore School of Law student, said she wants the law firm to compensate her for the wages she would have earned from the fellowship—and she comes armed with a U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) determination that the law firm allegedly discriminated against her with its requirements. “I don’t find discrimination against anyone to be OK,” she said in an interview.
