Law firms Ellis George and K&L Gates were last Tuesday ordered to pay $31,000 to the defense in a case filed against State Farm General Insurance Co. for submitting a “bogus” plaintiff’s briefing written with artificial intelligence products, which reportedly cited “phony” judicial opinions and fabricated authorities.
Michael R. Wilner, former U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Central District of California and an arbitrator and mediator for Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services (JAMS), was appointed in January as a special master in the case, captioned Lacey v. State Farm, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
