Lehman<\/strong> of the law firm Munck Wilson Mandala. \u201cSuch willful, fraudulent, and malicious conduct warrants the imposition of punitive damages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a statement to <em>Billboard<\/em>, a representative for Pharrell said: \u201cA standard accounting review is already in progress. The lawsuit filed is premature as there may not even be a dispute between the parties. If the accounting review determines that money is owed, the appropriate party will pay it. Pharrell has consistently acted in good faith. He has great respect for Chad and looks forward to resolving this in a way that honors their shared history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFriday\u2019s lawsuit, obtained and first reported by <em>Billboard<\/em>, isn\u2019t the first legal battle between the two collaborators. Back in 2024, Hugo filed another action accusing Pharrell of \u201cfraudulently\u201d seeking sole control over the \u201cNeptunes\u201d name; that dispute remains pending at a federal trademark tribunal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut the new case broadens the fight significantly, with Hugo accusing Williams of withholding royalties and refusing to hand over documents that would help Hugo figure out how much he\u2019s owed \u2014 part of what his lawyers call a \u201csystemic denial\u201d of his rights as a partner. In one passage, Hugo\u2019s lawyers say he\u2019s potentially owed up to $1 million in damages from the 2017 N.E.R.D. album <em>No One Ever Really Dies<\/em> alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cPlaintiff has not received his appropriate share of royalties in connection with The Neptunes and N.E.R.D.\u2019s album sales and released music, as well as distributions from touring income, and various merchandising deals,\u201d Lehman writes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHugo and Pharrell were still working together between 2020 and 2022, when The Neptunes produced music for artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Rosal\u00eda and A$AP Ferg. As recently as 2022, shortly before the duo were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Hugo told <em>Billboard<\/em> that he had recently been in the recording studio \u201cwith my fellow Neptune, comrade Pharrell Williams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut under the surface, conflict was allegedly brewing. Hugo\u2019s lawyers say he made repeated efforts starting in 2021 to get Pharrell to hand over \u201cmonthly statements, books and records, and royalty statements\u201d as required by their operating agreement. In August 2021, Hugo\u2019s attorneys started sending Williams demand letters seeking financial disclosures, doing so repeatedly over the last four years. But they say he largely ignored them, only offering \u201climited\u201d and \u201cincomplete\u201d documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDefendant Williams\u2019 persistent failure to provide [financial records] constitutes a breach of the operating agreement,\u201d Hugo\u2019s lawyers say. \u201cPlaintiff has been deprived of the transparency necessary to evaluate buyout proposals, confirm the calculation and categorization of distributions owed to him \u2026 and assess revenues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmid that growing tension, Hugo filed his trademark case in March 2024, claiming that Pharrell and his company were improperly trying to unilaterally register trademarks for their shared Neptunes name. As first reported by <em>Billboard<\/em>, Hugo claimed that their partnership required them to share the name rights: \u201cApplicant has committed fraud in securing the trademarks and acted in bad faith,\u201d he alleged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt the time, Pharrell\u2019s reps downplayed the dispute, saying they had repeatedly offered to involve Hugo and had always intended both men to \u201cshare in ownership\u201d of the name. In a September 2024 interview, however, the star confirmed that he and Hugo were no longer on speaking terms: \u201cI love him, and I always wish him the absolute best, and I\u2019m very grateful for our time together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the new lawsuit, Hugo\u2019s attorneys say the dispute has only continued to grow \u2014 and that their client is owed substantial money. They say they\u2019ve seen no revenue at all since September 2023 from an N.E.R.D. merchandising partnership, for instance, and they claim they\u2019re owed \u201cat least $325,000-$575,000\u201d from <em>No One Ever<\/em>, with \u201cpotential damages\u201d over the album \u201cexceeding $750k-$1M.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs recently as last month, Hugo\u2019s lawyers say, Pharrell\u2019s attorneys \u201cpromised to produce documents\u201d about the company\u2019s finances.
