\n\tA judge says Investigation Discovery complied with journalistic standards in its 2024 documentary chronicling domestic and sexual abuse allegations against Chris Brown.<\/p>\n

\n\tA Monday (Jan. 12) court order dismisses Brown\u2019s $500 million defamation lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment, the production company behind Chris Brown: A History of Violence<\/em>. The R&B star sued almost exactly a year ago, claiming this documentary was \u201cfull of lies and deception.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe lawsuit\u2019s primary issue was with the documentary\u2019s spotlight on a woman who alleges the singer raped her on a yacht owned by Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs in 2020. Brown says these claims are false and disproven by inconsistencies in the woman\u2019s account, as well as her own violent past and the fact that she concealed key text messages after reporting the incident to Miami police.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut in Monday\u2019s order, Judge Colin Leis says Investigation Discovery presents the perspectives of both sides in a balanced manner.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe court has personally viewed the entire documentary. The documentary recites most of the inconsistencies plaintiff notes, including the existence of the text messages,\u201d writes the judge. \u201cMedia defendants thus presented a \u2018fair and true\u2019 report of [the woman\u2019s] statements and the judicial record and proceedings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJudge Leis also says there\u2019s no merit to Brown claiming that the network defamed him by including an interview in which culture writer Scaachi Koul says the singer has a \u201cpredisposition for punching women in the face.\u201d As the judge points out, Brown \u201chas admitted to punching the singer Rihanna.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPlaintiff presents no evidence that Scaachi Koul\u2019s opinions about plaintiff\u2019s predilections are false,\u201d says the judge.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe order strikes Brown\u2019s lawsuit under California\u2019s anti-SLAPP law, which curbs the use of litigation to target First Amendment-protected free speech. This statute requires plaintiffs who sue journalists to establish at least \u201cminimal merit\u201d in order to move forward with a lawsuit \u2014 a standard that Judge Leis says has not been met here.<\/p>\n

\n\tLawyers for Brown and Warner Bros. Discovery did not immediately return requests for comment on the decision. Brown has the right to appeal the dismissal if he chooses.<\/p>\n
