AI models often convincingly spit out false information, and lawyers have repeatedly been penalized for failing to catch them. In June, a federal judge <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/volokh\/2025\/06\/26\/whoever-or-whatever-drafted-the-briefs-signed-and-filed-by-blackburn\/\" target=\"_blank\">threatened sanctions<\/a> after he filed a motion containing \u201cnon-existent quotations\u201d and other AI-generated errors \u2014 and then did so again in a brief defending his conduct: \u201cThe court views Blackburn\u2019s conduct as a clear ethical violation of the highest order,\u201d the judge wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLawyers for Fat Joe, facing Blackburn in another lawsuit, have accused him of sloppily using AI in that case, too \u2014 claiming to have found \u201cat least ten instances\u201d of such problems. After Blackburn blamed the problem on AI-powered research tools offered by LexisNexis, the legal research giant itself responded that such claims were \u201cmisleading\u201d and that Blackburn \u201cnever an authorized user or subscriber\u201d of such tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAI mishaps have already repeatedly cropped up in other music cases. In 2023, convicted ex-Fugees rapper Pras Michel accused his lawyer of botching his criminal trial partly because he relied on AI to help craft his closing arguments. Masha,\u201d claiming it was a 2021 ruling by a federal appeals court. But the case doesn\u2019t exist, which Blackburn later acknowledged after it was flagged by defense counsel. He later apologized, saying he took \u201cfull responsibility for this error.\u201d But for Judge Gordon, that was not enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMr. Blackburn\u2019s admission of responsibility and remorse expressed \u2026 do not completely excuse his lack of diligence, especially in light of the pattern behavior identified,\u201d the judge wrote, referring to previous discipline in other cases, including the previous AI problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor Blackburn, the punishment might be the least his problems. In June, he was arrested for allegedly hitting Fat Joe\u2019s process server with his car \u201cin a failed attempt to avoid being served\u201d with the lawsuit.
