\n\tUsher<\/a> is suing music producer Bryan-Michael Cox<\/strong> and other organizers of a failed Atlanta restaurant project, claiming in a new lawsuit that they still owe him $700,000 and misused money he lent to buy the property.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a case filed last week in Georgia court and obtained by Billboard<\/em>, the Atlanta superstar says he lent more than $1.7 to Cox and others to help purchase a building for \u201cHomage ATL,\u201d a high-end restaurant and lounge in the city\u2019s tony Buckhead neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the deal didn\u2019t go through, Usher\u2019s lawyers say he demanded his money back, but the Homage organizers only returned $1 million \u2013 because the rest had allegedly been used elsewhere without permission.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPlaintiff loaned [the money] for the sole purpose of purchasing the Buckhead property,\u201d Usher\u2019s attorneys write. \u201cThe defendant investor group failed to purchase the Buckhead property and, instead, diverted the Raymond loan balance for [other] purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCox is a well-known R&B producer who\u2019s produced hits for Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and Usher himself. The other defendants are alleged project partners Keith Thomas and Charles Hughes, as well as attorney Alcide Honor\u00e9 and several companies allegedly tied to the project.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a statement on Instagram, Cox seemed to pin the blame for the dispute on others: \u201cMy legal team has \u2026 advised me of a lawsuit involving a company where I am only a passive minority shareholder. I was not a participant in that business transaction and have no involvement in the ongoing legal process. While I\u2019m unable to share more details right now, I want to make one thing absolutely clear: my 27-year friendship with @usher remains fully intact.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Usher\u2019s lawyers don\u2019t seem to be in a friendly mood. They claim Cox and the rest of the Homage organizers were \u201cunjustly enriched\u201d by using the remaining loan funds for other reasons, \u201cwhich was to plaintiff\u2019s detriment, damage, and expense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUsher\u2019s case claims that Cox, Hughes and Thomas approached him last year about the project, which was \u201cintended to offer the public a unique dining lounge experience.\u201d Though he says they wanted the locally-raised superstar to sign onto the project as a full-fledged partner, Usher says he \u201cdeclined to become an investor\u201d and instead opted merely to loan the group money to buy the restaurant\u2019s location for more than $6 million.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the \u201cdays and months passed\u201d in early 2025, the two sides continued to negotiate a potential investment by Usher, but no deal was ever reached and the Buckhead property was never purchased. Eventually, the star says he demanded his money back \u2013 but that Honor\u00e9 effectively told him that some of the funds had been used elsewhere.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHonor\u00e9 all but admitted that the Raymond loan balance was disbursed when he stated that returning that balance was \u2018not that easy\u2019 because plaintiff\u2019s funds had been deployed for \u2018other purposes\u2019,\u201d Usher\u2019s attorneys write. \u201cHonor\u00e9 stated [that Usher] would be repaid once the Buckhead property was purchased and the property was refinanced, indicating that he apparently no longer had possession, custody, or control over the funds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeveral of the lawsuit\u2019s claims are aimed solely at Honor\u00e9, including breach of bailment \u2013 meaning he failed to return Usher\u2019s property \u2013 as well as various other forms of wrongdoing, including negligence and breach of fiduciary duty. He did not return a request for comment. The case accuses the rest of the investors of breach of contract, unjust enrichment and keeping money that wasn\u2019t theirs. Thomas and Hughes could not immediately be reached for comment.<\/p>\n
