\n\tRauw Alejandro<\/a> has been sued for allegedly sampling multiple tracks by reggaeton legend DJ Playero on his hit 2022 album Saturno<\/em> without proper licenses.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Puerto Rican superstar (Ra\u00fal Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz ) faces the claims in a lawsuit brought Thursday (Aug. 21) by BM Records, a reggaeton-focused label and distributor based in Florida. The company says it owns much of the catalog of DJ Playero (Pedro Gerardo Torruellas Brito), a fixture of the genre known for working with hitmakers like Daddy Yankee.<\/p>\n

\n\tBM Records says multiple songs off Alejandro\u2019s album Saturno<\/em>, which debuted at No. 25 on the Billboard 200 in November 2022 and spent 28 weeks on the chart, contain unlicensed samples of Playero songs owned by the company.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe company alleges that Alejandro\u2019s \u201cDE CAROLINA\u201d samples Playero\u2019s \u201cLa Gente Sabe,\u201d \u201cPANTIES Y BRASIERES\u201d samples \u201cCamuflash,\u201d \u201cDEJAU\u2019\u201d samples \u201cSigan Bailando\u201d and \u201cPUNTO 40\u201d samples \u201cTengo Una Punto 40.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAt no point in time did any of the defendants obtain a valid license to sample the Playero works on Saturno<\/em>,\u201d writes BM\u2019s lawyer Daniel Lifschitz<\/strong>. \u201cAs such, the continuing exploitation of Saturno<\/em> infringes the copyrights to the Playero works owned by [BM].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe lawsuit accuses Alejandro of violating the Copyright Act and seeks up to $150,000 in damages per infringed song. <\/p>\n

\n\tNotably, Playero himself is credited on multiple of the Saturno <\/em>tracks cited in the lawsuit, and he enthusiastically promoted the album<\/a> on social media when it was released. Playero could not immediately be reached for comment on the lawsuit.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a statement to Billboard<\/em> on Friday (Aug. 22), Alejandro says he \u201cbelieved these songs were cleared properly by my previous label, but it seems the person who claimed the rights might not have actually controlled them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy only focus has always been on creating legendary albums, and I have nothing but respect for other creators,\u201d adds Alejandro.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlejandro was previously signed to independent label Duars Entertainment, and his music was released via a licensing agreement with Sony Music Latin. Reps for Sony declined to comment on the matter, and a Duars rep did not immediately return a request for comment. <\/p>\n

\n\tBM Records previously filed a similar copyright lawsuit against Bad Bunny in 2021, claiming the Latin star\u2019s Billboard Hot 100 single \u201cSafaera\u201d sampled three Playero songs without licenses.<\/p>\n

\n\tPlayero released a statement at the time distancing himself from the claims, saying he knew nothing about the lawsuit and that it\u2019s a \u201cbeautiful feeling\u201d to a hear a song on the radio that sampled his work. Bad Bunny ultimately settled with BM Records in 2023.<\/p>\n
