Herscovitz suspended the criminal prosecution after Boodarian was repeatedly unresponsive in court. He sat outside the public\u2019s view in what defense attorney <strong>Nancy Kolocotronis <\/strong>described as a \u201csuicide gown\u201d \u2014 a protective garment worn by inmates considered at high risk for self-harm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe record will reflect he\u2019s staring into space and not responding to the court\u2019s questions,\u201d said Judge Herscovitz. \u201cDue to this behavior, the court entertains a doubt as to defendant\u2019s mental competency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe judge ordered Boodarian to appear in mental health court on Sept. 3 for a competency review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn such proceedings, mental health experts review a defendant\u2019s state and determine whether they\u2019re well enough to defend themselves at trial. If the answer is yes, Boodarian\u2019s criminal prosecution could resume. If it\u2019s no, he could be sent to a mental health institution or another treatment program instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKolocotronis declined to comment following the hearing, though she stated in court that Boodarian has \u201csevere mental health issues.\u201d Lead prosecutor <strong>Hilary Williams <\/strong>did not have any comment as she left court and spoke with the victims\u2019 family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKaye and Deluca, both 70, were found dead from gunshot wounds during a welfare check on their Encino house on July 14. Investigators determined that the couple was shot during a \u201cviolent struggle\u201d when they arrived home on July 10 and discovered an intruder inside the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBoodarian was arrested on July 15 and charged with two counts of murder and one count of first-degree residential burglary. He remains in custody and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKaye worked as a music supervisor on <em>American Idol<\/em> for 15 seasons.
