{"id":6445,"date":"2025-06-12T15:59:34","date_gmt":"2025-06-12T15:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/karol-g-denies-lawsuit-claims-over-gatubela\/"},"modified":"2025-06-12T15:59:34","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T15:59:34","slug":"karol-g-denies-lawsuit-claims-over-gatubela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/karol-g-denies-lawsuit-claims-over-gatubela\/","title":{"rendered":"Karol G Denies Lawsuit Claims Over &#8216;Gat\u00fabela&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/billboard.com\/artist\/karol-g\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Karol G<\/a> and Universal Music Group (UMG) are firing back at a copyright lawsuit over a track from her chart-topping <em>Ma\u00f1ana Ser\u00e1 Bonito<\/em> \u2013 including arguing that a producer\u2019s Instagram comment about the alleged similarities was posted \u201csarcastically\u201d and wasn\u2019t an admission of guilt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe case, filed earlier this year, claims that the singer (<strong>Carolina Giraldo Navarro<\/strong>) and her co-writers stole key elements of her 2022 song \u201cGat\u00fabela\u201d from an earlier track called \u201cPunto G,\u201d released by producers Ocean Vibes (<strong>Jack Hernandez<\/strong>) and Alfr3d Beats (<strong>Dick Alfredo Caballero Rodriguez<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut in their first response to the case on Tuesday, Karol G and Universal Music Group flatly denied all of the lawsuit\u2019s allegations. They said a musicologist report cited by the accusers, which claimed the songs were \u201cextremely similar,\u201d was \u201cbiased\u201d and \u201cpatently improper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDefendants deny that they have interpolated, sampled, used, or copied plaintiffs\u2019 work,\u201d the Colombian star\u2019s lawyers write. They also say they\u2019ll be able to prove that \u201cGat\u00fabela\u201d was \u201cindependently created,\u201d which could mean they have evidence that Karol G\u2019s song was actually created first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tReleased in February 2023, <em>Ma\u00f1ana Ser\u00e1 Bonito<\/em> was a critical and commercial success, winning album of the year at the Latin Grammy Awards and reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 \u2014 the first all-Spanish language album by a woman to do so. \u201cGat\u00fabela\u201d was a hit in its own right, reaching No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the Hot Latin Songs chart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHernandez and Rodriguez sued in March, claiming they \u201cimmediately recognized\u201d the song\u2019s similarities to \u201cPunto G,\u201d which they say was released two months earlier: \u201cBy every method of analysis, \u2018Gat\u00fabela\u2019 is a forgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn one passage, the lawsuit cited an Instagram exchange in which Alfr3d confronted one of Karol\u2019s producers (<strong>DJ Maff<\/strong>) over the alleged similarities. In screenshots in the complaint, Maff responded by commenting \u201cdon\u2019t tell anybody,\u201d followed by a laughing emoji. The accusers claimed this meant he had \u201cshockingly admitted\u201d to stealing their song.<\/p>\n<p>But in Tuesday\u2019s response, attorneys for Karol G and the other defendants said the Instagram exchange had been taken out of context \u2013 and that a joking social media post was hardly an admission of copyright infringement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDefendants admit that DJ Maff promoted \u2018Gat\u00fabela\u2019 in an Instagram post dated August 26, 2022 and that DJ Maff sarcastically posted the comment appearing in the screen shot,\u201d write Karol\u2019s defense attorneys. \u201cDefendants otherwise deny the allegations contained in paragraph 4 of the Complaint, including Plaintiff\u2019s characterization of DJ Maff\u2019s Instagram comment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe case over \u201cGat\u00fabela\u201d is still in the earliest stages. Karol G and UMG will likely soon file a motion to dismiss the case entirely, after which Hernandez and Rodriguez will respond. The judge will then decide if the case can move forward toward an eventual trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a statement to <em>Billboard<\/em>, an attorney for the accusers said the complaint filed in March \u201cspeaks for itself\u201d and reiterated its allegations: \u201cAt the end of the day, we believe that artists and producers should be properly credited with and compensated for the works that they create,\u201d said <strong>Chester R.
