Those claims, which the star denied, were quickly dropped \u2013 and now Jay is suing the attorney for defamation and extortion across two different court cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSeeking to dismiss one of them, Buzbee took an unusual step Wednesday: directly quoting from decades-old lyrics in his legal filings. The song, the 2000 smash hit \u201cBig Pimpin\u2019,\u201d includes crass references to prostitution \u2013 which Buzbee suggests contradicts Jay-Z\u2019s claims to a stellar reputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cCarter\u2019s latest pleading bemoans what he describes as the \u2018incredibly painful\u2019 event of explaining [the rape] allegations to \u2018his wife\u2019 and \u2018their children,\u2019\u201d Buzbee writes. \u201cTo put those allegations in their proper context, it is helpful to view them alongside the following lyrics from one of Carter\u2019s most successful songs, which became famous nationwide around the time [the accuser] claims her sexual assault occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe filing included four lines from the opening verse of \u201cBig Pimpin\u2019,\u201d including: \u201cYou know I thug \u2018em, f*ck \u2018em, love \u2018em, leave \u2018em \u2018cause I don\u2019t f*ckin\u2019 need \u2018em \/\u00a0 Take \u2018em out the hood, keep \u2018em lookin\u2019 good but I don\u2019t f*ckin\u2019 feed \u2018em.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cReleased more than 25 years ago, this song of Carter\u2019s, like many of the others that made him famous, contains lyric after lyric describing Carter\u2019s views on the loss of innocence and how men should treat women,\u201d Buzbee writes in the filing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJay-Z himself has previously expressed regret about the lyrics to \u201cBig Pimpin\u2019,\u201d which reached No. 18 on the Hot 100 and spent 20 weeks on the chart in 2000. In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702304023804575566644176961542\" target=\"_blank\">a 2010 interview<\/a> with the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, he said that re-reading the song\u2019s words was \u201creally harsh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSome [lyrics] become really profound when you see them in writing. Not \u2018Big Pimpin\u2019. That\u2019s the exception,\u201d Jay-Z said at the time. \u201cIt was like, I can\u2019t believe I said that. And kept saying it. What kind of animal would say this sort of thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe use of rap lyrics in court cases has become increasingly controversial in recent years, as critics argue that statements made in hip hop songs are unfairly treated more literally than other song lyrics. Efforts have been made to ban rap from criminal cases, and a group of law scholars recently warned that Drake\u2019s civil lawsuit \u2013 claiming the lyrics to Kendrick Lamar\u2019s \u201cNot Like Us\u201d defamed him \u2013 is \u201cdangerous\u201d and could have a \u201cchilling effect\u201d on future artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe case against Jay-Z, filed in December, claimed that he and Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs raped a 13-year-old Jane Doe at an after-party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Jay-Z forcefully denied the allegations, calling them a \u201cblackmail attempt\u201d by Buzbee and his client. And after just two months of heated litigation, the accuser dropped her case without a settlement payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWeeks after the case was dropped, Jay-Z sued both Doe and Buzbee in Alabama, accusing her of defamation and accusing both of malicious prosecution and other wrongdoing. That case followed an earlier lawsuit in California in which the star accused Buzbee of extortion and defamation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn Wednesday\u2019s filing, the Texas lawyer asked a federal judge to dismiss the Alabama case, calling it a \u201cclear attempt by Carter to punish his accuser and silence potential accusers.\u201d And he cited the \u201cBig Pimpin\u2019\u201d lyrics, using them to suggest that Jay-Z was being hypocritical when he said he \u201cmourns his children\u2019s loss of innocence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA rep for Jay-Z did not immediately return a request for comment on the new filing. In a statement to <em>Billboard<\/em> on Thursday, Buzbee said: \u201cMr. Carter\u2019s lawyers have spent millions of dollars aggressively trying to cast me as a villain and unethical person with blatant lies and half truths. At the same time they\u2019ve vainly attempted to portray Mr. Carter as a bastion of virtue. Look at my background and compare it to his. I\u2019m a Marine Corps Captain who served my country in the infantry and recon during two conflicts. Enough said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJay-Z\u2019s California case against Buzbee also remains pending. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/jay-z-tony-buzbee-sean-combs-lawsuit-escalates-1235312841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported by <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, the judge hinted in February that he might dismiss Jay-Z\u2019s extortion claims while allowing the defamation claim against Buzbee to move ahead.
