{"id":5468,"date":"2025-04-25T17:34:32","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T17:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/diddy-trial-prosecutors-say-cassie-assault-video-is-fair-game-for-jury\/"},"modified":"2025-04-25T17:34:32","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T17:34:32","slug":"diddy-trial-prosecutors-say-cassie-assault-video-is-fair-game-for-jury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/diddy-trial-prosecutors-say-cassie-assault-video-is-fair-game-for-jury\/","title":{"rendered":"Diddy Trial Prosecutors Say Cassie Assault Video Is Fair Game For Jury"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<span>P<\/span>rosecutors are firing back at efforts by Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs to bar an infamous 2016 surveillance video from his upcoming sex trafficking trial, calling it a \u201cdesperate\u201d attempt to avoid \u201ccrushing\u201d evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith his trial looming next month, Diddy\u2019s attorneys argued last week that the clip \u2014 showing him assaulting his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura in the hallway of a Los Angeles hotel \u2014 has been deceptively edited and would \u201cunfairly confuse and mislead the jury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut in a response filing Friday, prosecutors say those arguments are \u201coverblown\u201d and are merely a pretext to prevent jurors from seeing \u201csome of the most damning evidence of his sex trafficking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe defendant has been overwhelmingly concerned with the existence of the video surveillance since the assault occurred and has taken great measures to ensure it was not released,\u201d prosecutors write. \u201cNow facing trial, the defendant attempts to keep this devastating proof from the jury. His grasping arguments to preclude this crushing evidence should be quickly dismissed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCombs was indicted in September, charged with running a sprawling criminal operation that aimed to \u201cfulfill his sexual desires.\u201d The case centers on elaborate \u201cfreak off\u201d parties in which Combs and others would allegedly ply victims with drugs and then coerce them into having sex, as well as on alleged acts of violence to keep victims silent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJury selection is currently set to start on May 5, with opening statements scheduled for May 12. If convicted on all of the charges, which include sex trafficking and racketeering, Combs faces a potential life prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Cassie video, which aired on CNN in May, showed him attacking her at the Intercontinental Hotel in March 2016. The clip drew far more public attention to the accusations against the star \u2014 who was then only facing civil lawsuits \u2014 and prompted an apology from Combs shortly after it aired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy behavior on that video is inexcusable,\u201d Combs said at the time. \u201cI take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I\u2019m disgusted now. I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the lead up to the trial, Combs\u2019 lawyers have repeatedly targeted the Cassie tape, accusing prosecutors of unfairly leaking it and alleging that CNN had unfairly edited it. Last week, they formally moved to ban it from the trial, calling it \u201cinaccurate\u201d and \u201cunreliable\u201d because of edits that were \u201cspecifically designed to inflame the passions\u201d of viewers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut in Friday\u2019s response, the feds said those issues were quibbles that could easily be fixed at trial, not valid reasons to withhold the tape from jurors entirely.
