{"id":5326,"date":"2025-04-16T22:10:49","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T22:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/diddy-wants-two-month-trial-delay-in-sex-trafficking-case\/"},"modified":"2025-04-16T22:10:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T22:10:49","slug":"diddy-wants-two-month-trial-delay-in-sex-trafficking-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/diddy-wants-two-month-trial-delay-in-sex-trafficking-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Diddy Wants Two Month Trial Delay in Sex Trafficking Case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<span>A<\/span>ttorneys for Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs are asking a federal judge to postpone his sex trafficking and racketeering trial by two months, blaming prosecutors for delays and saying they cannot \u201cin good conscience\u201d go to trial in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a letter to the judge filed Wednesday (April 16), the star\u2019s lawyers say the feds are dragging their feet on turning over crucial evidence and that the extra two months will give them \u201cthe necessary time to prepare his defense\u201d for a new superseding indictment that was unveiled earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe request \u2014 far longer than the two-week delay Diddy\u2019s lawyers had hinted they might seek \u2014 is opposed by prosecutors, according to the letter: \u201cThis is a problem that the government has created, yet it opposes our reasonable request,\u201d write attorneys <strong>Marc Agnifilo<\/strong> and <strong>Teny Geragos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA spokesman for the prosecution declined to comment on Combs\u2019 request for a two-month delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCombs was indicted in September, charged with running a sprawling criminal operation that aimed to \u201cfulfill his sexual desires.\u201d The case centers on elaborate \u201cfreak off\u201d parties in which Combs and others would allegedly ply victims with drugs and then coerce them into having sex, as well as on alleged acts of violence to keep victims silent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA trial has long been set to start on May 5. If convicted on all of the charges, which include sex trafficking and racketeering, Combs faces a potential life prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt a hearing Monday, prosecutors told Judge Arun Subramanian that they believed Combs\u2019 legal team was stalling for time, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sean-diddy-combs-arraignment-3aec2c0fd746a05b5a524017ce589b93\" target=\"_blank\">according to the <em>Associated Press<\/em><\/a>. Agnifilo said at the time that he might seek a \u201cvery short\u201d two-week adjournment over discovery issues, and Subramanian gave them until Wednesday to file such a request: \u201cWe are a freight train moving toward trial,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn Wednesday\u2019s filing seeking instead a two-month delay, Diddy\u2019s lawyers argued that the new indictment implicates \u201csubstantially new\u201d alleged conduct. They also said prosecutors were \u201cstill producing discovery\u201d and had failed to turn over key materials related to a sex trafficking charge that carries a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence if Combs is convicted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cUnder these circumstances, with discovery seemingly incomplete on a 15-year mandatory minimum count, we cannot, in good conscience, go to trial on the scheduled date,\u201d Agnifilo and Geragos wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince his indictment, Combs\u2019 legal team has indicated that it wants to take the case against him to trial relatively quickly. After the star was refused bail in September, Agnifilo said he was \u201cgoing to do everything I can to move his case as quickly as possible.\u201d The start of jury selection for the trial has been scheduled for May 5 since October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut superseding indictments are a common reason that judges delay criminal trials, giving a defendant more time to prepare a defense to new charges and new evidence.
