\n\tKarol G and Universal Music Group (UMG) are facing a copyright infringement lawsuit over a track from the Colombian superstar\u2019s chart-topping album Ma\u00f1ana Ser\u00e1 Bonito<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a case filed in Miami federal court, producers Ocean Vibes (Jack Hernandez) and Alfr3d Beats (Dick Alfredo Caballero Rodriguez) say the singer and her co-writers stole key elements of her 2022 song \u201cGat\u00fabela\u201d from a song called \u201cPunto G\u201d they had released less than two months earlier.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBy every method of analysis, Gat\u00fabela is a forgery,\u201d lawyers for Hernandez and Rodriguez wrote in the Wednesday complaint. \u201cGat\u00fabela is substantially similar to the Work in critical respects that are not just incidental but rather go the core of each work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReleased in February 2023, Ma\u00f1ana Ser\u00e1 Bonito<\/em> was a critical and commercial success, winning album of the year at the Latin Grammy Awards and reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 \u2014 the first all-Spanish language album by a woman to do so. \u201cGat\u00fabela\u201d was a hit in its own right, reaching No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the Hot Latin Songs chart.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Hernandez and Rodriguez say that they \u201cimmediately recognized\u201d the song\u2019s similarities to their \u201cPunto G,\u201d and that a musicologist later reported to them that the main synthesizer riff and vocal chorus melody of Gat\u00fabela were \u201cextremely similar\u201d to the synth melody in their song.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAccording to the expert musicologist, the level of similarity between Gat\u00fabela and the Work is \u2018one we almost never see,\u2019\u201d the pair\u2019s lawyers wrote.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an unusual twist, the lawsuit says that one of the producers on the Karol G song \u2014 DJ Maff (Marvin Hawkins Rodriguez) \u2014 tacitly admitted to copying the earlier track: The lawsuit came with screenshots of an alleged Instagram exchange in which Alfr3d confronted Maff over the similarities.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDJ Maff shockingly admitted this was true, responding \u2018no le digas a nadie\u2019 (translated: \u2018don\u2019t tell anybody\u2019), accompanied by a laughing emoji,\u201d attorneys for the pair write. \u201cAs part of his attempt to cover up his admitted theft and misappropriation, DJ Maff would later delete both Alfr3d\u2019s comment and his own response from Instagram.\u201d<\/p>\n
