\n\tRapper Plies<\/a> is suing Megan Thee Stallion<\/a>, GloRilla<\/a>, Cardi B<\/a> and Souja Boy<\/a> for copyright infringement over allegations that the 2024 song \u201cWanna Be\u201d features an uncleared sample from his 2008 track \u201cMe & My Goons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles federal court, says the Megan and GloRilla stole Plies\u2019 material indirectly<\/em> \u2013 that they used a legally-licensed sample of a Soulja Boy song that itself illegally borrowed from \u201cGoons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDefendant Soulja Boy authorized Megan thee Stallion and GloRilla to sample [his song,]\u201d lawyers for Plies write. \u201c[Wanna Be] incorporates substantial elements of the copyrighted material underlying \u2018Me & My Goons,\u2019 without authorization from plaintiffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWanna Be,\u201d released by Megan and GloRilla in early April, debuted at No. 11 on the Hot 100. A remix, featuring Cardi, was released in late May. The song features a prominent sample of Soulja Boy\u2019s 2010 track \u201cPretty Boy Swag,\u201d which spent 16 weeks on the chart that summer.<\/p>\n

\n\tPlies (Algernod Washington<\/strong>), best known for his 2007 singles \u201cShawty\u201d and \u201cHypnotized,\u201d names all four stars (Megan Pete<\/strong>, Gloria Woods<\/strong>, Belcalis Almanzar<\/strong> and Deandre Way<\/strong>) as defendants in the lawsuit, as well as various companies and labels allegedly involved in the song.<\/p>\n

\n\tReps for the defendants did not immediately return requests for comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tLawsuits like the one Plies filed Wednesday \u2013 claiming that a legal sample featured an unlicensed sample \u2013 sound strange but aren\u2019t uncommon. In the modern music industry, all samples in major releases are strictly cleared, and even borderline interpolations are often licensed to avoid any risk of litigation. But copyrighted material featured within the sampled songs can be trickier to identify.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast month, a lawsuit filed by Barry White\u2019s estate claimed that Future and Metro Boomin\u2019s \u201cLike That\u201d sampled from a 1980s hip-hop song that had ripped off White\u2019s music. And in May, a little known New Orleans group sued Beyonc\u00e9 for the same thing over a sample of Big Freedia featured in \u201cBreak My Soul,\u201d though they dropped the case several months later. White\u2019s case remains pending; the case against Beyonc\u00e9 was quickly dropped.<\/p>\n
