Carter <\/strong>as the presiding judge last week and will handle the eventual trial \u2014 was issued from the bench and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/diddy-sean-combs-indictment-court-149b784f3f6b37a84afa6081f2a904e6\" target=\"_blank\">reported by the <em>Associated Press<\/em><\/a> and other outlets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe trial date is in line with what the rapper\u2019s legal team wanted. In court documents Wednesday (Oct. 9), they said they were continuing to assert his constitutional right to a speedy trial and would be seeking to get the case before a jury in April or May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThough a trial date is now set, the schedule could still be pushed back, particularly if prosecutors file new charges or add defendants to the case. It could also be delayed if Combs eventually waives his speedy trial right to give his team more time to prepare \u2014 a decision that might hinge on whether he\u2019s granted bail in a pending appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen he does stand trial, Combs will face charges of racketeering and sex trafficking over what prosecutors say was a sprawling criminal operation aimed at satisfying his need for \u201csexual gratification.\u201d The decades-long scheme allegedly involved not only elaborate sexual parties called \u201cfreak offs\u201d and other sex abuse, but also forced labor, kidnapping, arson and bribery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cFor decades, Sean Combs \u2026 abused, threatened and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct,\u201d prosecutors wrote in their indictment last month. \u201cTo do so, Combs relied on the employees, resources and the influence of his multi-faceted business empire that he led and controlled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThursday\u2019s hearing came less than 24 hours after Combs\u2019 lawyers accused the government of leaking evidence to the media, including the infamous surveillance video of Combs assaulting then-girlfriend Cassie in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt Thursday\u2019s hearing, according to <em>AP<\/em>, Assistant U.S. Attorney <strong>Emily Johnson<\/strong> pushed back on those \u201cbaseless\u201d claims, saying it was simply an effort by Combs\u2019 lawyers to prevent jurors from seeing the \u201cdamning\u201d Cassie video: \u201cNot a single one of those alleged leaks are from members of the prosecution team,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe next court date for Combs\u2019 case is currently set for December.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs will stand trial on May 5 in his racketeering and sex trafficking case, a federal judge ruled at a court hearing on Thursday (Oct. 10).
