{"id":2946,"date":"2024-10-09T20:37:01","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T20:37:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/barry-white-estate-sues-over-like-that-but-not-future-metro-boomin\/"},"modified":"2024-10-09T20:37:01","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T20:37:01","slug":"barry-white-estate-sues-over-like-that-but-not-future-metro-boomin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/barry-white-estate-sues-over-like-that-but-not-future-metro-boomin\/","title":{"rendered":"Barry White Estate Sues Over &#8216;Like That&#8217; But Not Future &#038; Metro Boomin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/billboard.com\/artist\/barry-white\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barry White<\/a>\u2019s estate is suing over allegations that a prominent sample at the heart of Future and Metro Boomin\u2019s chart-topping \u201cLike That\u201d infringes the copyright to a 1973 song by the legendary singer \u2014 but they aren\u2019t accusing the stars of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a complaint filed last week in Manhattan federal court, White\u2019s estate claimed that a 1986 hip-hop song called \u201cEverlasting Bass\u201d by the duo Rodney-O (Rodney Oliver) &amp; Joe Cooley stole key elements from White\u2019s 1973 song \u201cI\u2019m Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAttorneys for the White estate say they waited nearly four decades to sue over the song because it was \u201creleased prior to the internet and was not widely distributed,\u201d leaving the estate \u201cunaware of the song when it was first released.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhite\u2019s heirs are certainly aware of \u201cEverlasting\u201d now, and it\u2019s not hard to guess why: The song was heavily sampled in \u201cLike That,\u201d which debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 earlier this year \u2014 so prominently that Future and Metro Boomin credited Rodney-O &amp; Joe Cooley as co-writers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBy using an infringing sample, the lawsuit claims that \u201cLike That\u201d also infringes White\u2019s copyrights: \u201c\u2018Like That\u2019 copies substantial elements of \u2018I\u2019m Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Babe\u2019 \u2026 including but not limited to the iconic, immediately recognizable bass line,\u201d the estate wrote in its Thursday (Oct. 3) complaint.<\/p>\n<p>But crucially, the White estate isn\u2019t accusing Future, Metro Boomin or co-creator <a href=\"https:\/\/billboard.com\/artist\/kendrick-lamar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a> of any legal wrongdoing. The lawsuit pins the blame solely on Rodney-O &amp; Joe Cooley, saying they agreed to defend the stars against such accusations when they cleared the sample.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe duo did not immediately return a request for comment on the lawsuit\u2019s allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tReleased in March as the third single off Future and Metro\u2019s collaborative album <em>We Don\u2019t Trust You<\/em>, \u201cLike That\u201d reigned at No. 1 for three weeks and spent another 28 weeks on the chart. At the time of its debut, most of the focus was on the lyrics \u2014 since the track was one of the early salvos in the diss war between Kendrick and Drake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut the underlying music featured a sample from \u201cEverlasting Bass,\u201d a classic early hip-hop track that\u2019s also been sampled by Three 6 Mafia, Lil Wayne and E-40.
