And Tiny Win $71M Verdict Against Toymaker In OMG Girlz Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>T.I.<\/strong> and his wife <strong>Tameka \u201cTiny\u201d Harris<\/strong> won a stunning $71 million jury verdict Monday in their lawsuit claiming that toymaker MGA stole the design of a line of \u201cO.M.G.\u201d toy dolls from their real-life teen pop group OMG Girlz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.law360.com\/media\/articles\/1881556\/jury-finds-mga-owes-t-i-71-4m-for-ripping-off-ip-with-dolls\" target=\"_blank\">first reported by <em>Law360<\/em><\/a>, jurors awarded the couple and their companies the huge award after finding that MGA\u2019s dolls infringed both the trade dress and the likeness rights of the OMG Girlz \u2014 a defunct musical trio created by Tiny and featuring her daughter <strong>Zonnique \u201cStar\u201d Pullins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFollowing a three-week trial and a day of deliberations, the jurors awarded the rapper and his wife $17.9 million in actual damages and another $53.6 million in punitive damages. Neither side immediately returned requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe legal battle began in 2021, with T.I. (real name <strong>Clifford Harris<\/strong>) and Tiny claiming that MGA had committed both \u201ccultural appropriation and outright theft of the intellectual property\u201d by stealing the look of a group of \u201cyoung multicultural women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTheir complaint against MGA included side-by-side images, aiming to show how each OMG doll was directly based on a particular member of the OMG Girlz \u2013 Pullins, Bahja \u201cBeauty\u201d Rodriguez, and Breaunna \u201cBabydoll\u201d Womack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMGA maintained that it had done nothing wrong \u2014 that the dolls were more often branded as L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G., and that consumers would not confuse the toys for the \u201cshort-lived\u201d band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOver three years of litigation, the case already went to trial twice. The first trial, in January 2023, ended in a mistrial after jurors heard inadmissible testimony featuring accusations of racism against MGA. The second trial then ended in a verdict for MGA, with jurors clearing the company of wrongdoing. But that verdict was later overturned on appeal, setting the stage for yet another trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn the third try, the outcome swung in favor of T.I. and Tiny. In a livestream on Instagram following the verdict, she said it had been \u201ca hell of a fight\u201d but that \u201cwe couldn\u2019t be more happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe wanted to thank the jurors for just seeing us through this, and just believing in what we said,\u201d she said in the video. \u201cThey heard our story and they knew we wasn\u2019t lying.
