{"id":2377,"date":"2024-08-23T18:22:43","date_gmt":"2024-08-23T18:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/shaboozey-files-lawsuit-against-warner-music-for-breach-of-contract\/"},"modified":"2024-08-23T18:22:43","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T18:22:43","slug":"shaboozey-files-lawsuit-against-warner-music-for-breach-of-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/shaboozey-files-lawsuit-against-warner-music-for-breach-of-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Shaboozey Files Lawsuit Against Warner Music for Breach of Contract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmid the chart-topping success of \u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy),\u201d Shaboozey is now suing music publisher Warner Chappell \u2014 claiming the company is stonewalling his efforts to exercise a contractual provision that would give him an early exit from his deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a case filed Wednesday (Aug. 21) in Los Angeles, the country star (born Collins Obinna Chibueze) claims his publishing administration deal with Warner-Tamerlane (a unit of Warner Chappell) contained an acceleration clause \u2014 meaning he could repay 110% of advances to speed up the expiration of the deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShaboozey\u2019s lawyers say he invoked that clause last month \u2014 perhaps unsurprisingly, given the massive success of \u201cBar Song.\u201d But they claim Warner has, thus far, declined to even tell him how much is owed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTo date, Warner has refused to disclose to plaintiff the total amount of the unrecouped balance of prior advances it made,\u201d writes <strong>Todd Bonder<\/strong>, the star\u2019s attorney. \u201cWarner\u2019s conduct violates the administration agreement signed between the parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe lawsuit comes amid a breakout year for Shaboozey. \u201cA Bar Song,\u201d a genre-blending hit that interpolates J-KWON\u2018s 2004 rap hit \u201cTipsy\u201d into a bouncy pop country track, has spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, tying the longest chart-topping stint for a song in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn his complaint, Shaboozey also names his former record label, Kreshendo Entertainment, as a defendant. He claims the company \u2014 which he left in 2019 before signing a new record deal with Empire \u2014 is the reason Warner is refusing to turn over the crucial information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cKreshendo and [others] have instructed Warner not to provide plaintiff the total unrecouped balance related to advances made with respect to the compositions or has refused to authorize Warner to provide such information,\u201d his lawyers write.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe dispute appears to turn on Shaboozey\u2019s argument that he personally took over Kreshendo\u2019s role in the contract with Warner after he terminated his label. In his legal filings, he says that Warner \u201chas not agreed\u201d with such an interpretation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe lawsuit also claims that Kreshendo released three separate Shaboozey songs in 2019 after he had already terminated the deal \u2014\u00a0\u201cMore,\u201d \u201cJoan Jett\u201d and \u201cProsperity\u201d \u2014 without his permission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA spokesman for Warner Music Group did not immediately return a request for comment. A spokesperson for Kreshendo could not immediately be located for comment.
