His\u00a0partners in the music department at Ziffren Brittenham \u2014 David Byrnes, David Lande, Mitch Tenzer and Kelly Vallon \u2014 make up, he says, \u201cthe most important contemporary music practice of any law firm in the world.\u201d Certainly, along with Grubman Shire Meiselas\u00a0&amp; Sacks, and Taylor Swift attorney Donald\u00a0S. Passman\u2019s firm, Gang Tyre Ramer, it is one of the premier law firms for the music industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLande primarily represents Selena Gomez, Pharrell Williams, SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, Rosal\u00eda and Justin Timberlake (when asked if Timberlake called him after his recent DUI arrest, Lande answers, \u201cNo, I called him\u201d), and Byrnes\u2019 principal clients include Travis Scott, Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and the estates of Kurt Cobain, Mac Miller, Tom Petty and Eazy-E \u2014 hardly even an exhaustive list of their or the firm\u2019s clients. But the partners all work collaboratively to serve the firm\u2019s clientele, which also includes industry executives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor example, Byrnes and Lande represent Beyonc\u00e9 as a team. Lande \u2014 who served as a tour manager and tour accountant for such artists as Elton John and Madonna during breaks from his undergraduate and law school years \u2014 says he was involved in every aspect of the 2023 <em>Renaissance<\/em> world tour, \u201cfrom making the initial deal with Live Nation, reviewing all of the business plans, working with her and her team on what that business would look like as a tour, to ultimately its execution.\u201d Byrnes, who worked on the MTV show <em>I.R.S. Records Presents: The Cutting Edge<\/em> and as an editor at the now-defunct music trade publication <em>Cashbox<\/em>, consulted with the firm\u2019s film\/TV department to negotiate deals for Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s 2019 and 2020 films, <em>Homecoming<\/em> and <em>Black Is King<\/em>, respectively. Tenzer and Vallon work on many clients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGiven the depth and breadth of their music industry experience, legal and otherwise \u2014 Tenzer was director of business affairs at Sony Music, and Vallon\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 includes roles at CAA, AEG, several labels and <em>The Colbert Report<\/em>, for example \u2014 \u201cWe have really good market knowledge of what\u2019s cutting edge and what\u2019s achievable, and we all end up being business advisers to our clients \u2014 helping them think through deal structure and the kinds of deals they ought to do,\u201d Lande says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith more artists preferring independence over label deals and labels holding off on signing acts until they build a significant fan base, the deals before the firm\u2019s music department have evolved significantly. \u201cThere\u2019s a plethora of independent distributors and labels out there offering development-type deals, and we\u2019re dealing with those every day,\u201d Byrnes says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd Lande explains that artists are now more interested in building long-term value through equity. \u201cYears ago, it was just, \u2018Pay me this amount of money and I will endorse your product or service,\u2019\u00a0\u201d he says. Those deals still happen, but \u201cmore and more, our clients are entering joint ventures, funding things themselves and building businesses that capitalize on their celebrity in an organic way.
