{"id":1538,"date":"2024-06-26T20:24:44","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T20:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/climate-litigation-marked-by-global-expansion-and-strategic-filings\/"},"modified":"2024-06-26T20:24:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T20:24:44","slug":"climate-litigation-marked-by-global-expansion-and-strategic-filings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usatrustedlawyers.com\/blog\/climate-litigation-marked-by-global-expansion-and-strategic-filings\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Litigation Marked by Global Expansion and Strategic Filings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p>At least 230 new climate-related lawsuits\u00a0were filed globally in 2023, highlighting a trend toward strategic litigation that holds companies and governments accountable for climate action.<\/p>\n<p>Joana Setzer and Catherine Higham, co-authors of the report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/24778400-global-trends-in-climate-change-litigation-2024?responsive=1&amp;title=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Global Trends in Climate Change Litigation<\/em><\/a>, released by the London School of Economics\u2019 Grantham Research Institute Wednesday, noted several key features in corporate climate litigation that included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A new category of \u201ctransition risk,\u201d including cases filed against corporate directors and officers over their management of climate risks. (In early 2024, shareholders of Polish energy giant Enea received shareholder approval to sue former management over a coal investment);<\/li>\n<li>A growth in the number of cases concerning \u201cclimate-washing\u201d with 47 new cases filed in 2023, bringing the total to more than 140. More than 70% of completed cases were decided in favor of the claimants; and<\/li>\n<li>More than 30 \u201cpolluter pays\u201d cases working their way through the courts that seek to hold companies accountable for climate-related harm allegedly caused by their contributions to greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 230 new climate-related lawsuits\u00a0were filed globally in 2023, highlighting a trend toward strategic litigation that holds companies and governments accountable for climate action.
