Mandel. An inquiry to Jackson also went unanswered. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBarrett, a music contractor who had worked with Jackson in the late 1980s, sued the singer in 2023 for sexual assault and battery. Barrett alleged that in the spring of 1988, Jackson showed up at her Encino home unannounced, forced his way through the door, and violently raped her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to the lawsuit, Barrett is not the only victim of sexual violence by Jackson. Court filings included a declaration from a singer-songwriter who toured with Jackson in 1990, claiming he attempted to assault her in her hotel room and later threatened her into staying silent about the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe case was brought under California\u2019s Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act, which created a one-year window in 2023 for rape victims to file claims that would otherwise be barred by the statute of limitations. A rep for Motown did not immediately return a request for comment on this allegation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJackson never responded to the lawsuit, and no lawyer ever appeared on his behalf in court to defend the claims. Barrett\u2019s attorneys thus moved for default judgment earlier this year and sought $6.5 million in damages \u201cfor \u201csignificant and ongoing emotional distress.\u201d This, too, garnered no response from Jackson, and a judge granted the damages in full on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter the lawsuit was filed, Jackson was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/jermaine-jacksons-reps-drop-him-after-rape-lawsuit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly dropped<\/a> by his longtime reps at Artists Management Agency.
