The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland adopted a universal standing order Wednesday prohibiting the Trump administration from hastily deporting noncitizen immigrants who file petitions for writs of habeas corpus in Maryland federal court.
U.S. District Chief Judge George L. Russell III of the District of Maryland signed the standing order two months after the government mistakenly removed Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to El Salvador and during a time when Maryland is seeing a “high volume” of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention cases, according to legal experts.
