A Manhattan federal judge on Wednesday sentenced former U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-New Jersey, to 11 years in prison following his July conviction on charges including bribery, extortion, honest services fraud, obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
Menendez, 71, showed no discernible reaction as U.S. District Court Judge Sidney Stein of the Southern District of New York handed down the sentence.
“You were successful, powerful, and stood at the apex of our political system,” Stein said. “Somewhere along the way, you lost your way. Working for the public good became working for yourself.”
