Judge Approves Family’s $950K Wrongful Death Settlement Against EMTs

A federal judge in Pennsylvania affirmed a $950,000 settlement between a Pennsylvania fire department and the family of a woman who died after emergency medical technicians allegedly encouraged her not to go to the hospital for serious COVID-19 symptoms.

In a Monday decision, U.S. District Judge John F. Murphy of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania affirmed the settlement awarding $950,000 to the family members of Tamika Jones, who died a day after paramedics allegedly convinced her not to go to the hospital. The court also approved awards for $300,000 in fees and $30,000 in costs. The court determined the settlement amount was adequate, including the proposed allocation of 70% of the proceeds going to the wrongful death claim and 30% going to the survival claim. Murphy also determined the fees and costs requested were reasonable.
