Welcome to Supreme Court Brief. My name is Jimmy Hoover. I have been the Supreme Court correspondent for the National Law Journal and Law.com since 2023. In this newsletter, I provide avid high court watchers with the latest news and analysis of the court.
It was a busy Monday for the high court. At 9:30 a.m., the court released its list of orders from the previous week’s conference. The justices did not take up any new cases this week, but they did throw out a number of notable petitions. Among the discarded appeals was one from casino mogul Steve Wynn challenging the Supreme Court’s landmark First Amendment precedent, New York Times v. Sullivan, which has stood as a bulwark for press freedom since 1964. The court also turned away an appeal from the mother of a teen suicide victim to remove Section 230 immunity for an anonymous messaging app her lawyers said became a “breeding ground for cyber-bullies.”
