Chief Justice Roberts Pauses Judge’s Midnight Deadline To Return Man Deported To El Salvador

Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. has paused an order requiring the Trump administration to return, by midnight Monday, a Maryland father who was deported to a gang prison in his native El Salvador as a result of what the federal government admits was an “administrative error.”

Roberts granted the Trump Justice Department an “administrative stay” of a Maryland federal judge’s midnight deadline to return Kilmar Armando Abrego García. The stay, in effect pending further order of the Supreme Court, gives the justices more time to consider the government’s request to throw out the order to bring Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center, where he is being held.
