Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. on Wednesday temporarily paused court orders reinstating National Labor Relations Board member Gwynne Wilcox and Merit Systems Protection Board member Cathy Harris, two Biden appointees whom President Donald Trump summarily removed from their independent labor agencies.
The chief justice’s temporary stay gives the U.S. Supreme Court additional time to consider the Justice Department’s request to block the court-ordered reinstatement of Wilcox and Harris. The government argued to the high court in a filing just hours before Roberts’ order that Trump’s removal of Wilcox and Harris was within his constitutional authority as president.
