Parties Spar Over Expedited Discovery in Suit Against Ailing NHL Agent

A federal judge said he won’t decide on a Finnish sports agency’s attempt to speed up the case until a hearing next month in the group’s legal pursuit to collect more than $1 million allegedly owed by a National Hockey League Players Association agent who claims he only “has months to live” in a battle against terminal cancer.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton for the District of Massachusetts agreed to promptly schedule a pretrial conference for April 22 at the request of the plaintiff Professional Sports Services FI OY. The plaintiff, which manages professional ice hockey players in Finland, claims agent Jay Grossman has sought to delay the litigation by seeking extensions to file a motion to dismiss based on arguments the court already rejected.
